Idyllic surroundings, plenty to see and do

Fawnlea Cottage is located in a quiet courtyard in the village of Staindrop, which has a convenience store, fish and chip shop, post office, pub, bistro and traditional tea room. A lovely tree-lined walk across the road from the cottage, with a river running alongside, provides an idyllic stroll after a full day out exploring the area.

Rich history

If you have a passion for history, Raby Castle is within walking distance and Bowes Museum is only a short drive away.

You are also only a short distance from the historical market town of Barnard Castle (famous for its own castle), as well as the Banks’ lots of antique shops, and a Georgian theatre, and last but not least the national monument that is Hadrian’s Wall.

Also nearby is the famous Beamish museum, which provides a fascinating historical experience for all the family.

Beautiful scenery

Walks or rambles can be taken on the beautiful Teesdale Dales, or in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Take time to visit High Force Waterfall (the highest in England) and Hamsterley Forrest, or take a drive to the beautiful gardens at Eggleston Hall.

For water sports enthusiasts, there is sailing at Grassholme reservoir, water skiing at Baldershead reservoir, and canoeing on the River Tees.

A slower pace of activity can be found at Barnard Castle Golf Club, which is open to non-members.

From Staindrop, you can travel a short distance in any direction and find even more to do and see.

Durham city, and the market town Darlington, are only half an hours drive away, and further afield you are still only an hours drive from the Lake District.

You are also only an hour from the beautiful historical city of York, along with the more modern city of Newcastle, which includes an excellent shopping experience at the Metro Centre.
